Do ever feel anxious about visiting a dental office? Does thinking about upcoming dental treatment make you nervous? You are not alone. Drs. McKinley and Holloway are proud to offer sedation dentistry in Shelby Township, Michigan, for those with dental anxiety. We want you to be able to receive the dental treatment you need in full comfort. Depending on your individual needs, our dentists may suggest either minimal or moderate sedation.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Minimal Sedation

Minimal sedation, which is also known as laughing gas, is inhaled through a mask during treatment. Laughing gas can relax you through treatment, and even give a euphoric sensation. Minimal sedation is very safe. The amount of sedation administered is easily controlled and the effects will wear off within just a few minutes after we remove your nose mask. Better yet, you can safely and legally drive yourself home after your appointment.

Moderate Sedation

Moderate sedation, which is also called conscious sedation, is another way for us to help you have a comfortable experience at our office. Conscious sedation is often administered in pill form. With conscious sedation, you will remain awake during your treatment, but you will feel at ease and relaxed. If conscious sedation is recommended for you, you will be given instructions to take the pill before your appointment. Have a friend drive you to and from your appointment. When you arrive, you will be extremely relaxed and perhaps drowsy.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Who can benefit from sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry can help anyone who:

  • Is afraid or anxious when going to a dental office
  • Has had traumatic experiences with dental treatment
  • Gags easily
  • Has difficulty becoming numb
  • Is afraid of needles and shots
  • Has particularly sensitive teeth
  • Has complex dental issues that require lengthy appointments
  • Struggles with the smells, noises, and tastes associated with dental care

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, sedation dentistry is very safe. We will go over your medical history with you before your treatment to decide which sedation option is best for you. We will monitor you closely throughout your dental treatment to avoid any complications.

Will I remember anything about my treatment?

It is unlikely that you will remember details of your treatment. Although many forms of sedation dentistry allow you to be aware of your surroundings and respond to any instructions from our dentists, you will likely feel as though you slept through your procedure and wake up with little to no memory of the treatment.
