Do you ever feel anxious about visiting a dental office? Does thinking about upcoming dental treatment make you nervous? You are not alone. Dr. McKinley and Dr. MicKinley-Holloway are proud to offer sedation dentistry in Shelby Township, Michigan, for those with dental anxiety.
At our office, we make smiles sparkle. However, we understand that the first step in this process is making sure our patients feel comfortable and confident in the dental procedures and services we provide. This is why we encourage everyone to schedule a consultation and visit our office to have their questions answered and see which treatments meet their individual needs.
These consultations can be particularly informative and helpful to manage dental anxiety. We will give an in-depth review of the variety of sedation dentistry services offered, ensuring your oral care concerns are met with safety and comfort.
Types of Dental Sedation
We offer two levels of dental sedation for our nervous or anxious patients: minimal sedation with laughing gas or moderate sedation with oral conscious sedatives.
For those who find themselves tensing, restless, or suffering from other signs of anxiety as dental procedures begin, we may recommend (and you may prefer) a minimal sedation treatment.
Minimal sedation, which is also known as laughing gas, is inhaled through a mask during treatment. Laughing gas can relax you throughout your treatment, and it may even give you a euphoric sensation. Minimal sedation is very safe.
The amount of laughing gas sedation administered is easily controlled and monitored throughout your appointment, and the effects will wear off within a few minutes after we remove your nose mask. Better yet, you can safely and legally drive yourself home after your appointment!
With 40 years of experience, Dr. McKinley and Dr. McKinley-Holloway understand dental anxiety can take a multitude of forms. A common example of dental anxiety manifesting itself is unease before arriving at your appointment. To save patients from unnecessary stress, we may recommend a moderate sedation treatment instead.
Moderate sedation, which is also called conscious or oral conscious sedation, is another way for us to help you have a comfortable experience at our office. Conscious sedation is generally administered in pill form that you will take before your appointment begins. With conscious sedation, you will remain awake during your treatment, but your body and mind will feel at ease and relaxed.
If conscious sedation is recommended for you, you will be given instructions to take the pill before your appointment. Have a friend drive you to and from your appointment. When you arrive, you will be extremely relaxed and perhaps drowsy. You may even forget some parts of your treatment afterward.
Don’t Let Dental Anxiety or Phobia Hold You Back!
Dental anxiety and the more extreme cases such as dentophobia, are complex medical issues that we take very seriously here. Just as welcoming is our dental team, who can help answer questions before, during, and after your consultation. We appreciate your input, which assists us to create your ideal dental procedure and help the next one go even better.
Our discussion with you will, of course, include going over your comfort levels with the services we offer and the treatments you’d like to receive—including your options of sedation dentistry!

Sedation dentistry can help anyone who:
- Is afraid or anxious when going to a dental office.
- Has had traumatic experiences with dental treatment.
- Gags easily.
- Has difficulty becoming numb.
- Is afraid of needles and shots.
- Has particularly sensitive teeth.
- Has complex dental issues that require lengthy appointments.
- Struggles with the smells, noises, and tastes associated with dental care.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes, sedation dentistry is very safe! We will go over your medical history with you before your treatment to decide which sedation option will work better for you. We will also monitor you closely throughout your dental treatment to avoid any complications.
Will I remember anything about my treatment?
It is unlikely that you will remember details of your treatment. Although many forms of sedation dentistry allow you to be aware of your surroundings and respond to any instructions from our dentists, you will likely feel as though you slept through your procedure and wake up with little to no memory of the treatment.
