When a patient’s tooth does not have enough structure left to support a dental filling, but the tooth is not badly damaged enough to need a dental crown, Dr. McKinley and Dr. Holloway may recommend dental inlays and onlays in Shelby Township, Michigan.
A dental inlay is like a dental filling, but the restoration is within the bumps on the chewing surface of the tooth. A dental onlay, which is sometimes called a partial crown, is more extensive. Dental onlays cover one or more cusps, or bumps, of the tooth. In fact, inlays and onlays are sometimes referred to as “partial crowns.” They are a more conservative treatment, and are designed to restore and support your natural tooth structure.
To place a dental inlay or onlay, our dentists will first remove the decay or old dental filling. Impressions are taken of the tooth and those surrounding it so the inlay or onlay can be constructed. Our dentists use CEREC technology to produce same day restorations, including dental inlays and onlays. When your restoration is finished, our dentists will check the fit of your inlay or onlay. After any needed adjustments are made, the inlay or onlay is permanently cemented into place.
In addition to inlays and onlays made from tooth-colored material, our office also provides gold inlays and onlays and other gold dentistry not readily available in other offices.
We encourage you to contact our dental office today at 586-685-0880 to learn if dental inlays and onlays are for you and to schedule your next appointment. We are excited to treat you and your smile!
