Oral and maxillofacial surgery includes surgery of the mouth, jaws, and face. The purpose of oral surgery is to improve the health, function and appearance of your smile and supporting oral structures, including the jaw.

Oral Surgery Shelby Township, MI

While we make every effort to provide the most conservative treatment possible, there are a number of situations in which Shelby Township dentists, Dr. McKinley-Holloway and Dr. Arben Uldedaj, may recommend oral surgery, including:

  • Impacted teeth
  • Tooth loss
  • Jaw-related problems (such as TMJ disorders or uneven jaw growth)
  • Tooth extractions and wisdom teeth removal
  • Bone grafting (in preparation for implants or to increase bone density)

Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to come in. In many cases, these teeth do not break through the gums properly because there is not room in the mouth for them. The wisdom teeth will become impacted, or trapped, between the jawbone and the gums. Impacted teeth can cause swelling, pain, and infection. To avoid this, our dentists will surgically remove them.

If a patient has lost one or more teeth, our dentists may recommend dental implants, which are made up of a titanium implant post and a dental restoration. Our dentists will surgically place the implant post into your jawbone to act as tooth roots. The dental restoration is connected to the implant post.

Our dentists may perform jaw surgery if a patient has unequal jaw growth. The surgery will correct the alignment of the jaw for one that is more balanced, functional and healthy. Jaw surgery is also used to improve the fit of dentures. Any irregularities in the jawbone are corrected to ensure ideal fit. In the case of severe TMJ disorders, our dentists may perform jaw surgery to correct problems with the joint.
